  “This is…” I started, catching myself on the side of my chair.

  “Amazing,” Charm stared in awe.

  “I was going to say ‘too much,’” I replied, but chuckled. “And… amazing.”

  We landed to applause. As we stood there, a thought hit me. I turned to Charm, taking her hand in mine. “Next stop after this is Earth. You know that that means?”

  “I get to see where you were raised? The bed you used to sleep in every night?”

  I laughed. “Not sure about that, but… I’m pretty damn sure we’ll find a way to get you that red dress.”

  Charm was all smiles, throwing her arms around me, but then suddenly she noticed someone approaching. Her smile faded as her eyes went wide and I felt her body go limp against me, so that I had to catch her to help her stand.

  “Charm, what is it?”

  She regained her footing, took a breath, and stared at the woman. Not a regular woman, I noticed, but a woman whose eyes were entirely green, and sticking up out of her blue hair were blue antennae that glowed slightly at the rounded tips. Her ears were long and pointy, falling out to the sides in a way that could’ve been goofy and weird, but combined together had a rather cute appeal.

  “Charm? Do you know this woman?”

  “Laurel,” Charm murmured. She took another breath, then stood tall. “And it’s a long story.”

  Before I had a chance to ask more, she’d darted over to the new arrival, thrown her arms around her, and the two were laughing, spinning, hugging and then… kissing.

  I blinked, not sure what exactly was happening, but very interested in hearing this ‘long story’ she had said it would be.

  Until then, I turned back to my other teammates, letting Charm and her old ‘friend’ catch up as we prepared to see what else was waiting for us here at the Citadel. Mostly, though, I was looking for my brother. I had no idea what that moment of seeing him would feel like or what would come after, but damn was I ready.

  Author Ramblings

  This brings us to the end of book four, and I’m going straight into five. Exciting! This was a fun book for me to write because I was able to kind of get Charm that red dress, hint at where we might see a real one soon, and explore their relationship a bit more. I put Shimmer front and center on the cover, because I like her a lot and want to see more of her, and was glad she got a moment to shine here, too—I want to get more into her backstory and family in the next book. So, we’ll see.

  Oh, and… sorry! Cliffhanger in a sense. You KNOW they’re going to meet some cool people on the Citadel, especially if you’ve read Ex Gods 1-3. If not, you probably want to do so before Ex Heroes 5, or it won’t be nearly the same experience.

  How about these other characters? I know, I know, there wasn’t a lot of time to get to know Trunk (appeared in Planet Kill and Psychobitches), Letha (Planet Kill), or Ezra and team (Psychobitches), but that’s what those books are for. Plus we’ll see more from them as we go forward, as they’ll be integral to the story.

  I’d also like to see a special character enter into the next book, one from the Sloan books. We’ll see if it works out that way. I’m an outliner, but I discover the hell out of those outlines as I write, often changing things completely. One of my editors wrote in comment: “Yeah, he does!” Haha.

  So yeah, if you’re interested in seeing more of what’s underneath Abaddon and what led to the explosion and end of the Quencher, go read Psychobitches. You also probably have read the Charm solo by now, right? Charm School Outcasts was written to be read before this book, but if you read it after I think it will be an interesting experience too—as long as it’s before Ex Heroes 5.
